Cara Goldthorpe

Examples of notable work include:

• Acting as junior counsel for the Defendant (led by James Bailey KC) in the Gray v Hurley litigation, a dispute relating to the beneficial ownership of property held in joint names purchased by the Claimant during the parties’ romantic relationship, allegedly as a result of undue influence. Her work involved a jurisdictional challenge which raised a number of novel conflicts of laws issues (Gray v Hurley [2019] EWHC 1636 (QB)), and successfully resisting the Claimant’s application for an anti-suit injunction (Gray v Hurley [2019] EWHC 1972 (QB), see also Gray v Hurley [2019] EWCA Civ 2222, reference to CJEU outstanding).
• Acting for the administrators in a complex and contested application to court for approval of fees and expenses of the administration (led by Marcia Shekerdemian KC).
• Advising (as sole English counsel) in a multi-million euro cross-border estates dispute.
• Supporting the Independent Third Party address complaints from small business customers of RBS’s Global Restructuring Group.
• Acting in a dispute over the ownership of bearer shares in a number of offshore corporations, which included issues of cross-border succession and trusts law (led by Zoë Barton KC and Jack Watson).
• A secondment to Stephenson Harwood LLP, working in the private client and pensions teams. She advised in a number of international trusts and probate matters, and was heavily involved in the preparation of a pensions negligence/rectification claim.
• Advising the beneficiary of a will trust on claims available against the executors and trustees for breach of fiduciary duty, as well as on a disciplinary complaint against the professional trustee involved.
• Advising and acting in a number of shareholder disputes, including disputes pertaining to beneficial ownership of shares, unfair prejudice actions, and derivative actions.
• Regularly appearing in the winding up court, and in bankruptcy proceedings.

Cara joined Chambers in September 2018 following the successful completion of her pupillage. Her pupil supervisors were Zoë Barton KC, Jonathan Hilliard KC, Andrew Mold KC, Julian Greenhill KC and Thomas Robinson.

Prior to joining Chambers, Cara worked at Lloyds Bank in a project group investigating the mis-selling of derivative products, where she handled customer complaints and prepared submissions to the Financial Ombudsman. She was also a research assistant in the field of environmental and planning law, and conducted research for a complaint to the European Commission.

Cara studied Law with French Law at University College London and graduated in 2016 with a first class degree. She won numerous academic prizes, including the Dean’s List for overall excellence in her final year and the Richardson Prize for the highest result out of students on the law with language course.

She is a Lord Denning scholar at Lincoln’s Inn, and speaks fluent French.
